Pardita Mascarenhas, the founder of Break of Dawn, began this brand’s journey with preservative-free, freshly made almond milk. Then moved to feta cheese and other dairy alternatives.

Made from almonds this cheese contains healthy fats, fibre, protein, magnesium, and vitamin E, and no oil.

4. Katharos

Katharos, launched in 2019, which means ‘Pure’ in Greek is one of the early vegan cheese brands in Mumbai. Crafted by Jasmine who wanted a clean cheese for her plant-based meals.

Made of almonds and cashew, Katharos is without any chemicals, preservatives, oil, soya, dairy or gluten. The feta is WFPB (whole food plant based).

5. Homecraft

Homecraft promises to deliver vegan cheeses with flavours that are identical to dairy cheese — tastes like cheese but not cheese. This cheese is made with cashew nut, coconut, apple cider vinegar and nutritional yeast also with additives to bring out the cheese like consistency and flavours.

6. 1ness

1ness’ founders Kajal and Dilip wish to build a range of taste-identical plant-based dairy alternatives.

The main ingredients in the cheeses are nuts, oil and starch. Vicotta is a fermented cheese made from cashews and modelled on traditional ricotta. Veganeer as the name suggests is a paneer alternative made from almonds, cashew and walnut oil. And Vozarella is your stretchy mozzarella!

Vicotta and Veganeer are Jain. But Vozarella is not Jain

7. Millie’s Cheese

It was a personal problem that lead Millie Mitra to look for lactose-free dairy-free cheese options and experiments lead to the development and launch of Millie’s Cheese. Today this is a very popular brand of vegan cheeses. A clean and natural label brand with “No Nasties” and the main ingredients being nuts or tofu.

8. The Orange Bowl

The Orange Bowl might be more famous for their sumptuous vegan desserts (especially their Freedom Cookies) but this vegan kitchen by brother-sister duo Tushar and Shamita also have some interesting fermented cashew cheese that they call anti-cheese!
